1,082 miles later...

The second leg of the trip was Fayetteville, NC to Richmond, VA and finally to Washington, D.C.

Less rain, more driving/culture confusion.

Before we got back on I-95, we stopped at the Chili's a few miles down from our hotel for lunch. We walked up to the hostess stand and were asked a question I had not heard in quite some time:

"Would you like to sit in smoking or non-smoking?"

After I got over the initial shock that some people actually still suffocate during their entrees, Courtney and I split a grilled chicken sandwich (we're splitting our meals to save money) and headed towards VA.

We originally really wanted to visit Mount Vernon (the estate of George Washington), however we wouldn't make it in time before it closed. Our second option? The Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond.

The museum was really cool - it was the history of the states, the different battles and the daily lives of the soldiers. The favorite exhibit for both of us was a turn of the century copy of Les Miserables.

Courtney's dad warned us of major rush hour traffic going into D.C., so we got an early dinner in Richmond. We headed down to the Church Hill historic district, and ate in a little cafe rebuilt from a townhouse.

We had REALLY good crab cakes and clam chowder.

After dinner, we got back onto our loyal friend I-95 towards our nation's capital.

Of course it seems that every time we get close to our evening sleeping arrangements, our smooth traveling is foiled.

It was about 7:30, and traffic was getting more congested as we passed each exit closer to D.C. Eventually, we found ourselves at a dead stop right in the middle of the highway.

Thankfully, we had just gotten gas, taken a pee break and had an abundance of trail mix and Doritos in the snack bag.

As it turns out, it was a pretty bad accident with a flipped over car.

Its kind of blurry, but you can see it was prettttty scary.

We finally got into the city and drove past the Pentagon and the Lincoln Memorial. We are staying on the campus of George Washington University with one of Courtney's sorority sisters, Mary Quinn. She happens to be in New York for the weekend, but she was extraordinarily hospitable and let us stay in her room anyway.

We had to do a scavenger hunt to find her room key which were hidden in an electrical box outside of the building. Safe? Probably not. Effective? Yep.

The building we are staying in is an refurbished hotel, complete with attached hair dryers to the wall.

Bed time, tomorrow we're going to make our rounds to the Smithsonian, Museum of Crime and Punishment, Holocaust Museum, National Mall and general wandering around D.C.

xoxo
